Kids from the United Way’s Fun in the Sun Program, The United Boys & Girls Clubs, Santa Barbara West and Goleta locations, and The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara jumped into animal themed morning activities including animal face painting, animal masks, races, double-dutch jump roping, carnival toss throwing and more. Montecito Bank & Trust had its activity money booth on-site which also proved to be quite popular. Music Academy students played music showing their superb talents and instruments answering questions from curious and interested kids.
This was all just the preamble to the real treat that waited inside Hahn Hall. The kids had the privilege to hear the 1886 Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals concert performed by the renowned classical music instructors from the Music Academy of the West. The concert narrative was delivered by Marilyn Horne, the world-wide famed opera singer. The kids were a great audience engaged in the concert and its wonderful musical depictions of elephants, kangaroos, fish and more. After the concert, the kids enjoyed a box lunch before departing and making way for the afternoon student lessons at the Academy.
Montecito Bank & Trust is the Music Academy’s 65th Anniversary Season Sponsor. Ms. Garufis shared, “If just a few kids today find special meaning in hearing this concert, setting off a dream that maybe someday they might follow in the footsteps of these gifted musicians, then we couldn’t be happier. For many of these kids, it’s a first time concert and a day they will long remember.”
