Amy Winehouse may be gone, but the spirit and soul she so expertly resurrected lives on. Need proof? Take 25-year-old singer/songwriter/producer Nick Waterhouse, who looks, feels, and expertly embodies the sound of the Stax Records back catalog. While Waterhouse’s proper debut is still forthcoming, fans would be remiss to pass up last year’s largely under-the-radar Is That Clear EP. Only five tracks in length, the record is filled with slinky guitar riffs, sizzling cymbal work, and female backing vocals. “That Place” is a sax-rich hip-shaker that feels like it’s being pumped out of the speakers of a sweaty 1960s club, while “Is That Clear” rock and rolls like Elvis in his prime. Waterhouse’s R&B authenticity is sure to suck you in, but it’s his potent croon that’s keeps Clear on heavy rotation. Nick Waterhouse plays SOhO Restaurant & Music Club (1221 State St.) on Sunday, April 29. Visit clubmercy.com for tickets and info.
