Chris Meagher’s article on the nursing home abuse case was very disturbing since the accused perpetrator, Brian Watt, apparently was already a register sex offender.
The California state agency responsible for background checks on applicants applying to be certified nursing assistants should not have issued a license to him to work in a nursing home.
Vulnerable adults in nursing homes are easy prey for predators and the operators of these facilities should also take the necessary precautions to make sure the people they hire do not have criminal records. The system put in place to protect our elders clearly did not work in the case of Brian Watt and the Central Cost Nursing Center, where he was able to abuse a dependent adult.
