New Orleans is a city with a culture and history as rich and disparate as the food it’s known for, and two events Wednesday, January 18, at UCSB explore very different aspects of the Crescent City. Land of Opportunity, which screens at 6 p.m. at the MultiCultural Center, is a documentary about the city’s tumultuous reconstruction, told through the stories of community organizers, urban planners, immigrant workers, public-housing residents, and more. Of course, music — in particular, jazz — is as integral to the New Orleans experience as a dark roux is to étouffée, and to that end, Arts & Lectures has a serious treat in store: New Orleans Jazz on Film includes a screening of rare archival film footage and a talk by Ben Jaffe, creative director and tuba player for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and son of the band’s cofounders Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Check it out at Campbell Hall at 7:30 p.m.
