Last week, students and professors launched Occupy I.V., an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street protests, which have spawned tent cities across the nation. Other colleges and universities also organized teach-ins and rallies under the banner of occupycolleges.org. UCSB Religious Studies graduate student Vikas Malhotra explained that the protesters at De la Guerra Plaza are passionate but have had trouble attracting a critical mass, and while UCSB can provide mass, its student-body has so far lacked passion. He hopes to change that. The I.V. occupation is located in People’s Park. The I.V. Recreation and Park Board added a last-minute revision to its November 10 agenda reading, “Consider establishing an assembly ordinance regulating an assembly of more than 10 people from sunset to sunrise in district parks.”
