Since releasing 3 Rounds and a Sound in 2008, Portland’s Blind Pilot has made more than a few tweaks. Most notably, the one-time folk-pop duo has fleshed out to a six-piece. The group has also abandoned their bike touring ways, hit the road with The Decemberists, and found a big-name producer in Tucker Martine. In turn, 3 Rounds’ follow-up, We Are the Tide, is marked by richer instrumental tones, higher production values, and a refreshing sense of completeness. In its biggest moments (“Keep You Right,” “Just One”), We Are the Tide feels almost anthemic, calling to mind a Heartbreaker-era Ryan Adams, full of barely echoed vocals and swelling horn parts. But even in slo-mo (“White Apple,” “New York”) Blind Pilot scores big, penning songs that not only resonate but play well with others, making for an album that’s truly greater than the sum of its parts. Blind Pilot plays SOhO Restaurant & Music Club (1221 State St.) on Friday, September 30. For tickets, visit clubmercy.com.
