Eleanor Friedberger (of indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces fame) records on her own for the first time in Last Summer. Friedberger has a distinct voice that exercises a deliberate vibrato and eccentric way of pronouncing each of her carefully chosen words. While the instrumentation behind her can range from nearly generic to space-age funk to just plain eerie, Summer boasts has a unique sense of cohesion. What ties these sounds together is the drama of Friedberger’s voice and quirkiness of her subject matter. The wandering nature of Friedberger’s wordplay can best be heard on standouts like “Glitter Gold Year” and “Early Earthquake,” two songs that combine fragmented stories and the repetition of nonsensical phrases. From words to sounds, Friedberger delivers glimpses into many genres and styles, making Last Summer a distinctive and desirable addition to any music collection.
