A Design Charrette To Envision Compact Downtown Neighborhoods

Plan Santa Barbara

After hundreds of hours of public meetings and workshops and the extensive deliberations by decision makers, the city is about to consider final adoption of the plan. However, there are still several challenging issues for which there is no clear consensus among the members of the City Council. Chief among those issues is the question of where to locate higher density housing, what kind of densities are appropriate for Santa Barbara and how to provide incentives for developers to build what the community needs fora sustainable future.

Proposed Design Charrette

One of the main concerns with the proposed compact residential development is the question of what it will look like and how it will fit in with the character of Santa Barbara. To answer that question the Santa Barbara chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIASB) and the local chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) along with the Community Environmental Council (CEC) are sponsoring a community Design Charrette to test the proposed Plan SB density scenarios with hypothetical designs on three selected site locations in the city.

Objective

The objective of the Design Charrette is to give decision makers and the public an opportunity to learn more about the proposed residential densities. The visual demonstrations will show how good design and intelligent policies can help meet the critical housing needs of our community and create aesthetically beautiful, livable and walkable neighborhoods.

The Housing Santa Barbara Design Charrette will be held on: Saturday July 16, 2011, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Saturday July 23, 2011, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Santa Barbara Junior High School Gymnasium721 East Cota Street, Santa Barbara
