Super Scope: Westmont College Observatory’s Keck Telescope

Thu Jun 16, 2011 | 12:00am

One of the most powerful stargazing tools on California’s Central Coast hides in the hills of Montecito, and you are invited to come check it out. This is the Westmont College Observatory’s 24-inch Keck Telescope, which is already credited with confirming the existence of one supernova and is used by students to research meteorite trajectories, variable stars, and other phenomena. Every third Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m., dozens of amateur astronomers and just curious onlookers converge on the Keck to peer into deep space during an open-to-the-public Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit event. See westmont.edu/observatory or call the telescope hotline at 565-6272.
