Cries of foul could be heard this week as word got out that Santa Barbara City College is seeking a new Continuing Education director. Still licking wounds from Adult Ed budget cuts, class cancellations, and newly imposed class fees, folks bristled at the ad on the college’s Web site advertising the $83,000-$101,000 position. However, college officials explained that the hire is not creating a new job but simply filling a vacancy that had been purposely left blank since 2009 when three Continuing Ed administrators left the school. At that time, in the name of fiscal prudence, the school opted to combine the vacancies and try to make do with fewer deans and directors. However, now, in response to current administrative overload, the school is bringing back one of those director jobs. All told, once this position is filled, the school will still have two fewer Continuing Ed administrators than it did in 2008.
