Week in Sports
Special Olympics Karate at SBCC Saturday
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 14-22
Greg Townsend Jr., one of the most heavily recruited prep football players in the nation, pays a visit to San Marcos High School on Thursday night (Sept. 16) with the Beverly Hills Normans. Townsend, whose father had a 13-year career in the NFL, is a 6’4”, 240-pound defensive end. He had eight tackles in Beverly Hills’ 29-7 victory over Santa Barbara last week.
The Dons will try to bounce back from that defeat Friday night when they host Lompoc at Peabody Stadium. Both the San Marcos and Santa Barbara games start at 7 p.m., and KTMS AM 990 will provide live broadcasts of the action.
Santa Barbara City College is the other football team in town this weekend. The Vaqueros face Ventura College at 6 p.m. Saturday at La Playa Stadium. SBCC rebounded from its opening loss to Hancock with a 30-14 victory at Antelope Valley last weekend. Quarterback John Uribe connected on 19 of 29 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Art Gonzalez caught nine of Uribe’s throws for 177 yards and a TD.
There will be a lot of kicking from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the SBCC Sports Pavilion. Special Olympics athletes will display their karate skills in a free exhibition. They have been training with Master D.K. Jang of Jang’s Karate Center and will be attempting up to 500 kicks. They also will participate in a board-breaking exhibition.
SBCC enters the week unbeaten (4-0-1) in women’s soccer and will host L.A. Harbor Friday afternoon. UCSB’s women, coming off a 1-1 tie on the road against UCLA, will play two home games, Friday night against Weber State and Sunday against Oklahoma.
