TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JULY 13-18

Major leaguers are not the only All-Stars being recognized this week. Santa Barbara’s summer baseball club, the Foresters, will have 12 players on the American roster at the California Collegiate League All-Star Game on Wednesday evening at the MLB Urban Youth Academy ballpark in Compton. The game starts at 7 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports West.

Meanwhile, football players who recently graduated from seven South Coast high schools (Bishop Diego, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, San Marcos Dos Pueblos, Santa Ynez and Cate) are getting ready for the 43rd annual County All-Star Game. They will face the North team at 7:15 p.m. at Santa Maria High School. Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12-under.

Bill Pintard of the Foresters will manage the Americans in the CCL All-Star Game. He guided them to a 14-6 victory over the Nationals in last year’s inaugural game. Foresters shortstop Brandon Loy was the MVP, but he will not be available this time because of a wrist problem.

The Nationals All-Stars include five players from UCSB, all of them members of the MLB Academy Barons. The Gauchos have more players in the game than any other college. The Barons will visit UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Field on Friday and Sunday for league games against the Foresters.

Today through Friday, the UCSB Recreation Center is the site of the 2010 Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp for ages 5-19. The camp is over 25 years old.

Santa Barbara’s beach volleyball stars, Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, have returned home after another overseas success – they won the FIVB Grand Slam tournament at Gstaad, Switzerland, and collected $43,500 – and they will compete in the AVP Hermosa Beach Open this weekend. The men’s final Sunday will be televised on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (tape delay).

Volleyball fans paid homage to the pioneers of the beach last Saturday during the dedication of Henry Bergmann Court at East Beach. Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos, the winningest pair in history, outlasted the local team of John Hanley and Dillan Bennett in an old-style sideout game, 15-12. The game was highlighted by several long rallies and the 18-year-old Bennett going up against the 53-year-old Smith.
