The future of hotels in Goleta should soon become clearer, as the City Council on 6/15 earmarked $35,000 to pay for a study of hospitality needs. The study, which is now being put out to bid, will assess the proper mix of hotel types; address whether a full-scale conference center should be built by a private company, public entity, or at all; and help determine whether the Page Site, located between Highway 217 and the airport south of Old Town, should be rezoned to something other than hotel/conference center. Currently, a handful of hotel projects are in various stages of development within the Goleta city limits, including a Marriott project on Hollister, a boutique hotel near the Camino Real Marketplace, and another facility on the other side of the Storke-Hollister intersection.
