David Helvarg to Speak at Natural History Museum
Award-Winning Journalist, Author, and Producer Will Share His Passion for the Ocean
Ocean environmentalist David Helvarg will be making a free guest appearance at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History this Wednesday, June 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will include a talk by Helvarg concerning his wisdom on ocean-related issues and a discussion of his new book, Saved by the Sea, A Love Story with Fish.
Various Santa Barbara environmental nonprofits will be in attendance, including Channelkeeper, Ty Warner Sea Center, Ocean Futures, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Conservancy, Save the Mermaids, and The Origami Whales Project.
Helvarg will be introduced by local marine biologist Holly Lohuis of Ocean Futures, and a book signing will follow Helvarg’s lecture. Both Lohuis and Helvarg will share their passion for the ocean and the maintenance of its conservation with attendees.
Helvarg is the president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, which combines community and knowledge to seek the active encouragement of marine conservation, and has also authored five books. His most recent work, which he will be promoting at this event, provides heartrending tales of Helvarg’s personal experience with the sea, along with an in depth look into the facets of the human condition.
Helvarg is also the editor of The Ocean and Coastal Conservation Guide and an award-winning journalist, has produced documentaries for PBS and the Discovery Channel, and written articles for the New York Times and L.A. Times. Working as a war correspondent, Helvarg has covered news on every continent, including Antarctica.
The event, coordinated by Channelkeeper, Choose to Reuse, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and the “Where’s Your Bag?” Campaign, has limited seating, and guests will be seated on a first-come basis.
