Chile Shake: German-born photographer Jonas Jungblut, who lives in Santa Barbara with his wife and seven-month-old son, is no stranger to travel, but his international excursions tend to be a little less eventful than his latest adventure in Chile, where he’s still awaiting a flight home in the aftermath of the 8.8 earthquake. “I saw the city go black,” writes Jungblut, who was on the 19th floor of a Santiago hotel when it hit. “I could see flashes from power lines exploding on the streets. I stayed under the doorway, holding on so I didn’t fall while the shocks persisted, and the building made sounds that made me think it was going to collapse at any second.” His gripping account and stunning photographs can be found at independent.com/chile, and the rest of his portfolio can be seen at jonasjungblut.com.
