Thanks to 1st District County Supervisor Salud Carbajal, the dangers of emissions from ocean-going vessels is becoming better known to Washington policymakers. The National Association of Counties voted unanimously last week in favor of a Carbajal-penned resolution urging Congress to craft policy that fights this type of pollution. According to county data, ships in the Santa Barbara Channel account for roughly 50 percent of the smog-causing nitrogen oxide released in the county.

Until Los Padres National Forest receives two inches of rainfall, new campsite restrictions introduced 8/5 by the U.S. Forest Service will remain due to an increased risk of fire during the summer. Open campfires and charcoal fires must burn at designated campfire sites. Smoking is restricted to closed vehicles and campfire use sites. Only the Winchester Gun Club and the Ojai Valley Gun Club will offer target shooting.
