The Santa Barbara County Waste Reduction Program is encouraging people to recycle their old television sets in anticipation of the digital broadcast switch. TVs and other electronics are considered hazardous waste in California; it is illegal to simply throw them away. Residents can drop them off at the South Coast Recycling and Transfer Station at 4430 Calle Real or its Santa Ynez counterpart at 4004 Foxen Canyon Road.

Feeling the crunch of economically trying times, the Daily Sound newspaper announced that it is returning to publishing five days a week instead of six. The Sound will no longer publish on Monday but will continue its Tuesday through Friday editions as well as its weekend issue. Publisher Jeramy Gordon wrote to readers on 1/31 that the “temporary” publishing strategy was adopted to prevent layoffs and “maintain the same level of content.”

On Monday, longtime Santa Barbara News-Press Associate Editor Scott Steepleton-who took over the daily paper’s newsroom when upper management and others walked out in July 2006-was demoted to city editor. Don Katich, named director of news operations in 2008, is assuming Steepleton’s old duties, including oversight of sports, features, life, and other sections.
