Perhaps the only thing that foodies hunger for as much as food is cookbooks. That means you have to get to Planned Parenthood’s 34th Annual Book Sale, which continues this weekend through Sunday, September 28, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. We’re not talking about a dusty rack of beaten tomes-this sale tempts with tables and tables of cookbooks, refreshed daily, and hiding boxes of more books beneath. One tipster who admits she can’t control herself at the sale writes, “The titles range from recent cookbook bestsellers by well-known Food TV celebs to old recipe books that accompanied Westinghouse ovens. If you are into various regional spiral-bound cookbooks that really are one of a kind, the sale is a veritable treasure trove.” What’s more, on the final day, PP generally cuts prices to a $1 a bag of books. With treasures like 1982’s The D.C. or Bust Cookbook: A Taste of Government-compiled by Santa Monica high schoolers trying to pay their way to D.C., including recipes like blueberry or cranberry muffins from Sen. Bill Bradley, California orange cream from Rep. Barry Goldwater Jr., and Senator Ted’s Bouillabaisse from Ted Stevens-how can you not stuff your bookshelves as a prelude to stuffing yourself?
