A 9/14 crash on Highway 1 killed a 15-year-old Lompoc resident and sent three people to the hospital with major injuries. According to a CHP report, Santa Barbara resident Shannon Salas was driving north on Highway 1 when his vehicle struck the southbound vehicle of Lompoc resident Juanita Miller. Salas’s vehicle caught fire, but witnesses extricated both him and his passenger, a 17-year-old Santa Barbara resident. (/hwy1918)

Even after the 9/8 suicide of Matt Aydelott from Cold Spring Bridge-the third suicide leap this year-Friends of the Bridge remains opposed to Caltrans’ $3 million plan to install a 10-foot high suicide barrier along Cold Spring Bridge. Group spokesperson Marc McGinnes charged the new fence would not prevent suicides. But suicide prevention advocates insist otherwise and point out that the Caltrans money could not be transferred to state-funded mental health programs. (/coldpspring918)

CHP investigators are looking for a 1996, 1997, or 1998 Ford Taurus that they suspect is the offending vehicle in the hit-and-run death of 14-year-old Goleta resident Christina Veloz-Payne.
