Ian Baker, the author of The Heart of the World: A Journey to the Last Secret Place will be speaking about his travels through Tibet to find the hidden land of Pemako, in the heart of the Tsangpo River Gorge. Between 1993 and 1998, Baker made eight expeditions into the Pemako region, the last being a National Geographic-sponsored search for a legendary waterfall described in Tibetan Buddhist texts, and sought out by several British explorers in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. He will discuss the historic and spiritual significance of the journeys in the contexts of Tibetan Buddhist and Western traditions.
The event, sponsored by the Vairotsana Foundation of Santa Barbara, will be held on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Unity Church (227 E Arrellaga Street). A $15 donation is requested for entrance. All proceeds will benefit the Vairotsana Foundation’s Stupa Project for Universal Peace.
