UCSB Professor Lauded for Psych Research

UCSB psychology professor Miguel Eckstein, in association with the Universities Image Understanding Laboratory, will be awarded with one of the two 2008 Troland Research Awards. The winners of this award receive $50,000 for achievements in the fields of psychology in regards to the relationships of consciousness and the physical world; the Troland Award enables psychologists to further their research in the broad spectrum of psychology.

Eckstein in particular is being awarded for his research in sophisticated theoretical analysis and modeling that addresses the fundamental issues in perception and understanding as well as its application to the practical problems in human vision, visual attention and medical images. The award is given to those who have performed experimental research in the field of mathematics or various types of symbolic logics, as well as any form of experimental research seeking psychological explanations. Eckstein is also being honored by the National Academy of Sciences for his work in psychology, along with twelve other individuals in the select areas of biology, chemistry, solar physics, ecology, mathematics, oceanography, planetology, social sciences and psychology; these awards will be presented on April 27 in Washington, D.C.
