WELL-PLACED MODIFIER: Above all other verbal mistakes, Indy copy editor Amy Matteson likes fixing misplaced modifiers best. In a sense, that seems especially symbolic. As a polisher of the garbled, typo-ridden text that ever-so-occasionally crosses her desk, Matteson herself is a modifierand definitely one that’s in the right place. This San Luis Obispo native and graduate of UCSB’s phenomenal Writing Program likes to defy copy editor stereotypes by throwing dance parties, beaching, orperhaps most shockinglynot wearing her glasses outside work. “I’m very happy to have drifted into such a laid-back, fun working environment,” she said of her job as a full-fledged editrix. And for her, it is fun: “A lot of people look at producing a polished work as a huge amount of labor, but if you’re a detail-oriented person who likes things being correct anyway, it’s actually a lot of fun to catch errors and fix mistakes,” she said.
