Capps Pushes for Enviro Legislation, Flood Protection
Representative Lois Capps won approval for legislation that would prevent plans to convert Santa Rosa Island into a hunting compound for wounded military veterans, and would also end all hunting on the island by 2011 by eradicating non-native elk and deer. Congress authorized the fiscal year 2008 omnibus spending bill on 12/18, including legislation superseding a 2005 measure by El Cajon Congressmember and Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter.
Authorization of the omnibus spending bill also shows what Congresswoman Lois Capps delivered to her district. The bill sets aside $280,000 to study the vulnerability of the levee protecting Santa Maria from flash flooding, $215,000 for flood control designs to protect Santa Barbara from flooding along lower Mission Creek, and $1.8 million to cover the costs of dredging Santa Barbara’s harbor.
