UCSB Touts $176 Million in External Research Funding This Fiscal Year

UCSB, continuing to show its capability as a top-tier research university, announced Monday it had received $176 million in external research funding during the last fiscal year, a record amount and 11 percent increase over the previous fiscal year. The largest source of funding was the National Science Foundation, as it has been for more than a decade, while the Department of Defense came in second.

Nearly 70 percent, $121.3 million, of UCSB’s total research funding came from federal agencies.

Over the last ten years, external research support at the university has doubled. “This extraordinary achievement in research funding is a testament to the outstanding quality and enormous impact of the broad spectrum of scholarly and creative activities underway at UCSB,” UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang said in a statement Monday. “External research funding is absolutely essential to our faculty, researchers, and students who are conducting groundbreaking research.”

Private foundation support rose 40 percent to $28 million, while corporate support for campus projects was bumped up 33 percent, or $11.6 million. The state and local government gave $3.7 million, while the UC system pitched in $11.2 million.
