Santa Barbaran Jane Cairns successfully defended her title as the women’s champion of the annual Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race in Santa Cruz. The grueling race – now in its sixth year – pits paddlers against 12 miles of open ocean. Facing a record-setting field of female competitors, Cairns – aided by atypically sunny skies and calm seas – navigated the course in a time of 2:29:53, nearly five minutes faster than second-place finisher and Santa Cruz resident Savannah Shaughnessy.
