Santa Barbara City Councilmember Brian Barnwell may re-examine mini-roundabouts after a recent trip to Portland, Oregon-regarded as a leader in traffic calming devices. While there, councilmembers Barnwell, Helene Schneider, and Roger Horton found the city slows traffic with “speed tables.” Barnwell said the devices were much cheaper and prettier than mini-roundabouts, which could mute the opposition heard recently when the council voted to make permanent six temporary roundabouts on the upper Eastside.
