On 4/30, the Audit Bureau of Circulations released its semi-annual report on readership trends and circulation tallies. It showed that in the past year, daily newspapers’ circulation has dropped an average of 2.1 percent nationwide. The Santa Barbara News-Press, however, dropped a whopping 9.5 percent, to 38,000 newspapers, which the L.A. Times called “one of the biggest declines in the region.” Many publications answered with statistics showing that the use of online newspaper sites grew by 5.3 percent, and urged the bureau to include online usage in next year’s report.
