The Goleta City Council unanimously turned down former
Councilmember Cynthia Brock’s request that it try to stop
Comstock Homes sewage from flowing through the
Sperling Preserve via the Devereux Creek pipeline. The Goleta West
Sanitary District rejected the more expensive and energy-intensive
alternative, which is to pump the sewage up to the Hollister Avenue
line, and the council said it lacked authority to intervene in the
sanitary district’s decision. Brock would like to see the Devereux
pipeline abandoned for environmental and aesthetic reasons.

Looking Good Santa Barbara will award Deckers Outdoor
Corporation with its Recycler of the Year Award at
a March 1 luncheon. Besides the use of post-consumer recycled
material and minimal packaging, the shoe company uses materials in
its Green Toe line that are sustainably grown and compostable,
including jute, wool, bamboo, cork, and water-based cement. Other
award-winning recyclers include Lululemon Athletica – which is
pressuring its landlord, Paseo Nuevo, to design a mall-wide
recycling program – and Walter Claudio Salon Spa, which purchases
Aveda’s organic beauty products exclusively and serves beverages to
clients in ceramic and glass containers instead of styrofoam or
plastic.
