The Gobble Song Goes Wacko
Spencer the Gardener’s Goofy Thanksgiving Songs Rocks
World
What began as a goofy Thanksgiving song has exploded into a
worldwide phenomenon. Spencer the Gardener‘s music video for their new
holiday tune “The Gobble Song” amassed more than 312,000 views on
YouTube over the Thanksgiving weekend, making the video one of the
popular website’s most watched clips ever.
According to filmmaker, and occasional Indy
contributor, Russ Spencer, “It’s basically one of the biggest videos
ever on YouTube.” And given that YouTube is one of the most visited
sites on the World Wide Web, that means a lot, not to mention that
ABC picked up the clip and sent it out as a feature story to its
affiliates around the country.
Why so popular? The filmmaker, who shot the video during a
Tuesday Farmers Market on State Street, explained, “I think people
responded to it because it’s so different than most stuff you see
on YouTube, which tends towards JackAss-type humor. It
dared to be silly and innocent and good, clean fun and for that
reason a lot of people found it refreshing. But if you read the
comments section you’ll see it also drove a lot of people out of
their minds.”
Whether this leads to global success for either Spencer remains
to be seen, but what’s clear is that the power of quirky pop mixed
with a message of Thanksgiving joy just might change the world. Or
at the very least, it will drive everyone mad.
