Sunday Morning Funnies

Are Independent readers in a talkative mood on Sunday mornings?

Sun Sep 17, 2006 | 01:56pm

Let’s try this again; there was some bad mojo on the
previous posting. To that end, I have reproduced the previous entry
along with the original comments. Feel free to expand on all of
this:

Is there a rally? What are yellow cards? Go to it readers, talk
amongst yourselves.

RALLY AND FUNDRAISER TO SAVE THE SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS

3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at De La Guerra Plaza

Prominent speakers will be invited. More details to come.

The Fundraiser: 4 to 6 p.m. at Ruby’s Cafe De la Guerra Plaza
food and music suggested donation: $20

Proceeds will be donated to the Journalist Loan Fund to help
current and former News-Press employees who have been forced out,
fired or suspended without pay.

Please join the organized newsroom of the Santa Barbara
News-Press in a show of support for journalistic integrity and a
fair employment contract. In recent weeks, 22 top journalists have
left the newsroom because Wendy McCaw, the owner and co-publisher,
was interfering in the news. An atmosphere of intimidation and
surveillance has replaced the openness that a free press
requires.

This month, 11 newsroom employees received notice that they
would be suspended for two days without pay for the *offense* of
attempting to deliver a letter to McCaw. The letter asked her to
stop harrassing employees who were seeking union
representation.

The No. 1 priority of these employees, some of whom have worked
at the paper for decades, is to restore ethical standards at the
News- Press. They expect to win their union election by a large
margin on Sept. 27. Until their demands for a fair contract have
been met, they are asking subscribers to CANCEL THE NEWS-PRESS
TODAY.

The Sept. 24 rally is organized by newsroom employees and the
Graphic Communications Union of the International Brotherhood of
Teamsters. Please help us send a message to McCaw that SANTA
BARBARA DEMANDS A FREE PRESS.

Local organizer

Sigmund Freud would have loved the desperate cry for help from
News-Press director of operations & CFO Randy Alcorn in
Sunday’s paper. The armchair shrink’s views are in (parenthesis):
Headline: “Looney Leaders Can be Devastating” (Well, he would
know.) “…Because they are compelled to maintain their delusion of
flawless judgment, they cannot tolerate dissenting opinions or
criticism. Loyalty is the prime directive, and loyalty must be
unquestioning. Suspicious of those who do not display conspicuous
conformity or who express any opposition to their policies and
decisions, they begin spying on all those around them. Eventually,
they become paranoid and retreat into an ever-smaller circle of
trusted confidants. Any leader can, and usually does, have personal
failures. Good leaders recognize their failures and learn from
them. Only bad leaders cannot. Only the neurotically insecure or
pathologically delusional cannot admit to error. Mr. Bush (Wendy)
would likely have gained greater support had (s)he been willing to
admit that Iraq (the purge) was a mistake and sought to correct it
— maybe even asked for help. Instead, (s)he pursues discredited
rationales for continuing a grossly failed course of action. What
makes leaders great is not that they can withstand widespread
criticism and remain resolute in their decisions; rather, it is
wise decisions based on a clear view of reality that make a great
leader — not delusional bunker mentality. A good leader knows that
sometimes the sails must be adjusted to avoid running the ship onto
the rocks. Unfortunately, we may be sailing with Captain Ahab.”
