UCSB students protested an ordinance proposed by Santa Barbara
County staff to bar students from moving their couches outdoors.
The prohibition on placing “indoor furniture outdoors” was
primarily aimed at preventing deliberate couch fires. Pointing out
that most such fires are set at the end of the year by departing
students, the protesters offered to work with county staff to draft
an ordinance less destructive to the Isla Vista way of life. The
Board of Supervisors accepted the offer by a 5-0 vote.
