Although developer William Levy plans to turn the vacant lot on
State Street near the beach into a parking lot for his proposed
Ritz-Carlton Club condos, several utopian landscapers have a backup
plan in the works. Owen Dell – founder of Fossil-Free Landscaping –
has spoken with city officials about creating a garden out of that
land if Levy does not come up with the necessary funding for his
time-share plan. The nine-month-old group convened at 125 State
Street last week to begin designing a garden featuring fruits,
fragrance, butterflies, an earthen tool shed, a solar-powered water
feature, and a compost pile with local restaurants’ coffee grounds
– all without the use of any fossil fuels. Most gardens rely
heavily on fossil fuels, from plastic pipes to pesticides.
Fossil-Free Landscaping makes its first public appearance during
the Earth Day Festival.
