The Transportation and Circulation Committee unanimously decided
last Thursday to re-stripe upper Chapala Street to accommodate a
bike lane and eliminate one of the two vehicle lanes. The bike lane
will extend from Mission to Alamar streets, in a configuration
similar to that of Bath and Castillo streets below Mission. Street
parking will not be removed. While neighbors concerned about
speeding cars on upper Chapala welcomed the re-striping which is
expected to slow traffic, other nearby residents worried there
would be too much traffic for one lane; however, traffic counts
showed an average of 5,000 vehicles per day, similar to traffic on
Bath and Castillo streets. The re-striping will be completed within
the next few weeks as part of street construction currently
underway.
