Having learned to drive in Santa Barbara many years ago, I don't remember that it used to be so difficult to drive safely there. Parking too close to corners is a major issue -- you cannot see a car approaching until you are in the intersection -- there should be no parking within at least two car lengths back from every corner! And perhaps parking should only be allowed on one side of the road. Bike lanes also make the lanes too narrow to support the speeds allowed (perhaps bikes should be banned from the one-way streets), and 'calming islands' are ridiculously dangerous! One-way streets could be made single-lane outside the downtown area to assist with visibility -- there is seldom more traffic on those streets north of Micheltorena than would be supported by a single lane. Until something is done by the City to accommodate the larger vehicles used by so many people, and to improve traffic safety, there will continue to be serious accidents like this.

A most interesting interview -- living out of town, it has been difficult to obtain good information about this fire -- I have really appreciated the work of the SB Independent!
