Over the past 20 years I have had memberships at Gold's (and subsequently Spectrum), 24 Hour Fitness, and the YMCA. One of the main differences between the mega gyms and WAC is that Alice and the other staff members actually know my name and care that I am there. If I don't show up for a class that I regularly attend, or if I haven't been to the gym in a few days, sure enough, Alice will check in and firmly encourage me to get back to the gym!

AShaw...always good for an oversimplification! Reread the article and LISTEN to what the young people are saying. This and other successful programs provide youth with skills that they can use to make a living--both career specific, and soft skills like commitment, follow-through, etc.

I know this might be obvious to many people, but saying that someone is a bigot is not name-calling. The definition of a bigot is someone who is intolerant.
Bill Clausen and A Shaw revel in their intolerance and are angered that others want to take away their right to exercise that intolerance, so therefore, they are bigots. It's simple fact.

As for the anonymity of these posts. I choose to remain anonymous because several years ago I wrote an editorial that was published in the News-Press regarding my opposition to the Boy Scouts of America. Several days later I received a death threat in the mail from a bigoted member of our community.

I'd rather be anonymous than dead.

Thanks goodness that a quality establishment has taken Finestra's place! Finestra was owned and operated by Calvary Chapel, a leading source of hate-mongering here in our beautiful city. Finestra was just one example of Calvary Chapel's attempts to "take back Santa Barbara" from "sinners". It was doomed to fail. Thankfully, Jeanine's is here to fill the void and provide Santa Barbarans with quality food in a pleasant atmoshere...period, no agenda, just good eats!
