He will go down on first degree murder under the Felony Murder Rule. If you commit a kidnapping and then during the crime the victim dies, regardless of who killed the victim, you are guilty of first degree murder. Sorry glwilliams. But maybe you can marry Hollywood in prison.

It is not another course. The course is already there. It is a great course and affordable. This development, on land that is clearly not fit for agriculture, would provide a huge economic boost for Lompoc. This would be a dramatic step for Lompoc to move away from its gang and meth image.

I still confused by the turnout in Isla Vista being over 100%. That seems wrong. Maybe there is an innocent explanation. Us in Santa Ynez do not want our representative decided by the beer bonging students of UCSB. We lived that life 20 + years ago. Now we don't live on mom and dad's money, we pay our taxes, and we have kids. There ought to be a way to combine the students with Goleta.
However, what is more wrong is post-election litigation. Nothing is worse in a democracy then casting doubts over election results with frivilous "sour grapes" lawsuits.

The Public Defender has no business complaining about budget issues in light of his office's staffing practices. The Public Defender is declaring itself "unavailable" to reduce its caseload. This in turns requires our tax dollars to pay for more expensive private lawyers to represent poor defendants. What the public does not know is that the Public Defender is and has staffed one or two attorneys to just ONE case. One public defender was assigned to handle the Linares case in Santa Barbara and one public defender was assigned to handle the Leeds case in Santa Maria. When I say one case, I mean the attorney had just that one case in his or her caseload. There is simply not enough work to do on ONE case to justify assigning an attorney making $140,000 plus a year to just that ONE case. Chris, if you were to call deputy public defenders in other counties that handle murder cases, they carry a caseload of over 10 murder cases at one time plus many, many more cases. Moreover, here in Santa Barbara Co. the Deputy DA's handling Leeds and Linares were carrying other homicide cases and numerous other felonies. It is laughable with staffing decisions such as these for the Public Defender to claim to be overworked.

In this economic climate the federal Omnibus spending bill is extremely frustrating. Counties like SB are cutting spending, but federal agencies are receiving boosts in funding levels. If almost every city and county in the counrty are going to tighten their belts, the federal government ought to as well.
It would be interesting to compare the average salary of a government attorney (PD, DA, County Counsel) and compare it to what private lawyers make.

Hi Chris,
Please check with the DA, but I am pretty sure that when the DA dismisses counts, such as in this case, then the DA calls the shots. Since the DA is agreeing to the less than maximum sentence and agreeing to dismiss charges, then the DA can require a guilty plea. If the defendant pleads "as charged" (ie no charges dismissed and the judge picks the sentence) then the defendant can choose guilty or no contest. I just think it is more meaningful for victims to hear the defendant say guilty. No contest sounds like a cop out.

Why does the DA always allow this crook and crooks like him to plead NO CONTEST? He was guilty and the DA should make him plead guilty. Also, 8 years sounds like an awful good deal for someone inflicting that much terror in people's homes.

That's not a lie about our Probation Department. Check it out!

Also, it is time for County Probation to stop turning a blind eye to convicted felons who return to the US illegally. Not a joke--the County Probation Dept. informs felons that they will not turn them into the Immigration if they return to the US illegally. Your tax dollars at work...

DA Stanley's comments are false. She has been to the office less than 10 times in the past year and a half. She is totally sick. Her top assistants are complete dopes. The man she appointed in charge of Santa Maria, Eugene Martinez, hides in his office all day with the door closed hoping not to have to make a decision. Her top assistant in Santa Barbara, Eric Hanson, watches baseball on his office TV during work hours. Her illness and poor appointments have encouraged a total lunatic like Dudley to run against her. Maybe Dudley will write another poorly worded, grammatically incorrect vanity press piece on Jordan Danner's run for DA. I am sure Dudley already scribbled it. The DA's Office is in for tough times ahead.
