What makes this highway widening proposal better than most is the HOV lane, which will reward those who do something to solve the congestion problem by carpooling or taking the bus. The HOV lane won't be nearly as effective if it stops before Montecito, which is one of the most congested areas. The whole project wouldn't have even been approved by SBCAG and by the voters (who approved the Measure A funding) if it didn't include the (entire) HOV lanes. Why are the left-hand exits so important to the MA that they want to make the new road less beneficial for everyone else?

The change doesn't affect the Meigs/Cliff intersection or the Cliff/Castillo intersection, or even the Cliff/Loma Alta intersection - it only goes between Lighthouse and Oceano, (the article mistakenly says Loma Alta), and there are no signalized intersections along that entire 1 mile stretch (and no crosswalks either, which is part of the problem).

Also, the headline is wrong - we will actuall lose TWO lanes, and gain three lanes - a center left turn lane plus two bike lanes, all of which we need more than two extra traffic lanes. Having two lanes in each direction is only good for letting people drive 50 mph instead of 40 mph. As long as people stick to the speed limit, two regular lanes will work fine.

The comment from jfklbj is wrong. There is more traffic on Upper De La Vina,where they made the exact same change, than there is on this stretch of Cliff Drive, and there haven't been traffic problems on De La Vina. Also, this change doesn't affect the intersection with Castillo - it ends way up at Loma Alta.

As someone who makes a dash across this road at lease twice a day, I think this is very necessary - It will prevent pedestrian and bicyclist deaths and injuries in the future, as well as the rear end collisions that the article mentions.

I hope that Council members will listen to what the Mesa residents have to say and work for the residents and not for their own agendas.

People who complain about taxes are usually the first ones to complain about lack of services that the taxes would pay for. If you vote no on this, you have no right to complain when your favorite state park is closed due to lack of funds to keep it operating.

The irony is that the folks who are so devoted to "protecting our downtown" from dreaded "density" don't live downtown and many say they never even come downtown anymore, because they might have to walk within three feet of a homeless person and, who knows, poverty might be contagious.

Listen to all the younger folks who give public comment and say they would like to be able to afford to live in Santa Barbara after they get out of school, and wish there was more rental housing that would allow them to live dowtown more cheaply and get around without a car all the time. They are the best hope for a future city that is more than an exclusive retirement community/tourist town.

UCSB used to be the #2 party school in the US, and now it's all the way down to #8?! They need to do better marketing.

Even if this ban passes, any kid who wants to buy pot will be able to, just like they did before the dispensaries. They'll just need to pay more for it and buy it from more dangerous people (or else make friends with somebody who knows more dangerous people).

In Holland, kids can buy pot with no hassle in "coffeeshops" in any city or town, and, guess what? A higher percentage of kids get high in the US than in the Holland. The point is that anybody who wants to buy pot here can buy it, dispensaries or no dispensaries.

Legalize it!

Bicyclists DO pay road user taxes - it's the Measure D sales tax on all goods that pays for most of the road maintenance in this county (and expires 2 years from now).
