Kudos to all these animal shelters that took in evacuated pets at no cost to the owner! If you weren't affected by the fire and have some extra money, please donate as I'm sure the shelters are feeling the after effects!

I wish more people felt the same way about squirrels as you do. The city of Santa Barbara is killing squirrels all along the coast line by Leadbetter beach claiming they are "a nuisance" and "a health hazard because they carry disease". Though when I called the city to ask what diseases they carry, none could be named.
I was told that for every call they get (like mine) asking them to stop killing the squirrels, they get 5 others saying that something needs to be done because there are too many of them. Though I run along shoreline daily and it's rare that I see more than a couple.
If you think that it's inhumane to kill the squirrels please call the Santa Barbara Parks and Rec department at
(805) 564-5418 and ask them to stop!

Holly - I don't think you read these bills correctly.
AB241 doesn't include shelters. So this bill will not apply to them.
AB242 - why not charge spectators at a dog fight with a felony? As the writer said, sometimes it's difficult to prosecute dog fighting without ample evidence, so if someone is involved in a dog fight - watching or participating, they will be charged the same. You can get jail time from stealing a loaf of bread, why not give jail time for abusing animals and forcing them to kill each other?
AB243 is not just for animal hoarding. If a person is charged with animal abuse it makes sense that they shouldn't own a pet again.

I agree with the author and with Holly that cats are treated as disposable commodities. Though I do support HSUS, not financially, but in what they do trying to educate the public.

In response to osotoh's comment - the column is called "Pet Chat". It's supposed to be about pets!

I think this is great. For those of us who don't have children and can't make any tax deductions for dependents, under this Act, we would be able to for our pets. Moreover, many of us childless couples see our pets as our children. I hope the HAPPY Act passes!
