This Public Hearing is incredibly important, because MASSIVE CHANGES are coming to the campus, including major bikeway alterations such as ELIMINATION of the Pardall bikepath tunnel, through which thousands of pedestrians and bicyclists pass safely under Ocean Road every day.
It may be the last meeting for the general public to comment about UCSB Vision 2025 - the University's Long Range Development Plan. Comments may be made in person at the hearing or submitted in writing. Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. PST, June 23rd, 2008.
Submit written comments to:

Following the local public hearing, the documents will proceed to the California Coastal Commission and the UC Board of Regents for review and adoption.

Mission Street under the 101 is horrible for bicyclists and these improvements will come too late for this unfortunate rider. Get busy, Santa Barbara!

Bike riders should instead use the much safer West Anapamu, West Micheltorena, or West Junipero Street bridges.

Mission Street under the 101 is horrible for bicyclists. Improvements were approved in Feb.08, so get busy, Santa Barbara!

Until then, riders should use the much safer West Anapamu, West Micheltorena, or West Junipero Street bridges.

This is one more sad symptom of the drain on federal resources attributable to the occupation of Iraq. Education cutbacks, economic recession, California National Guard not available to protect this nation, healthcare shortages for returning veterans, and now ocean safety buoys decommissioned: all resulting from sending $3 billion a week out of the country to fund Bush-Cheney's boondoggle.

Vera Cruz Park (200 block of East Cota Street in downtown SB) will have a "marketplace of ideas" for progressive and peace groups, from 10am until the march at 12 noon. Come and talk with other activists to discover what you are FOR, as well as being against war.
Some groups expected to be there:
- Healthcare For All;
- Humanist Society of Santa Barbara (for separation of church and state);
- Impeachment of Bush+Cheney Townhall Meetup.
The march will head to the County Courthouse to form a giant human peace symbol around 1pm.
In the afternoon, from 2-4pm, you are invited to the downtown Public Library Faulkner Gallery, for workshops to boost support and understanding for progressive and peaceful causes.

I was one of the more than 20 activists for peace who successfully lobbied the City Council to pass the resolution, calling for politicans in the nation's Capitol to end the occupation of Iraq, bring American soldiers home and care for them when they return. I commend Nick Welsh for his report, above.
Speaker after speaker observed that, among other things:
- Millions of dollars should have come to Santa Barbara for federal projects such as harbor dredging; instead the money has been spent on wars overseas.
- More that seventy American cities have already passed similar resolutions, strengthening each other when cities, mayors, states and governors lobby Washington together for action.
- The unwillingness and unresponsiveness of politicians in both parties to end the brutal, unpopular and immoral war means that democracy must come down to the local, non-partisan level, such as the City Council, for the will of "We the People" to be heard.
- The California National Guard and Coast Guard are down in strength, because too many of their brave members have been sent overseas; they would therefore be unable to assist Americans in case of natural disasters such as an earthquake, tsunami, mudslide, flood or wildfire.
- Servicemembers and their families are suffering through separation, combat injuries, mental trauma and suicide, with inadequate resources available to help them when they finally return home.
During more than an hour of public comments and statements from the Mayor and Councilmembers, NOBODY spoke in opposition to the motion, so it passed unanimously and deservedly so.

Yes, I wrote the above letter last Friday 11/30/07, thinking that Big Telco had just dropped said monstrosity onto the Granada building, with or without permission. That same day, I got reassuring responses from Mayor Marty Blum and Councilmember Grant House that the metal entity is permitted, temporary, and will be removed in a few weeks. Barney on The Beat reported this in the Independent online Tuesday 12/4/07, so I too was surprised to see my now obsolete letter published Thursday 12/6/07.
Sorry to stir things up unnecessarily...
