I'm sorry for Jessica's rocky start, but notwithstanding her particular experience, staying at home doesn't assure good parenting. Raising children to be productive, modest, compassionate and generous is hard work and I say good luck to all who are doing their best at it regardless of their work choices or necessities.

Yes, I'd like to know who voted against the round-abouts, too. It's unfortunate we can't rely on a driver's prudence and courtesy to drive at a moderate speed instead of having to install devices that require it of them, but then there you are. I live on Garden street and am very, very happy to have anything in place that slows these maniacs down. (I will be even happier when the round-abouts and the bump-outs are "beautified" as were the traffic calming devices in Samarkand.)

The freeway sign seems to me to be the same as the grape pickers' call to boycott grapes and the employees picketing in front of some of our grocery stores asking us not to shop in those stores. I am long retired and was never a member of a union, but am compelled to add that over the years it has seemed to me that only businesses that are not treating their employees very well need fear unionization and boycotts.

Enough with these overbuilt blots that are overwhelming our city. To get affordable housing do we really have to build, build, build and okay every new behemoth that includes a few units? Why not lobby instead for rent control? With increases tied to c.p.i. and the ability to adjust for market rent when an old tenant leaves and a new tenant comes in, there is plenty of profit for landlords, though not the outright plunder they may be used to.
