I wouldn't trust Venoco with a used kleenex. When they tried to frack Carpinteria's drinking water, every aspect of the campaign was a lie. They hired non-resident's to wave signs and gather signatures to create synthetic local support. Every sign they posted was a lie, and every claim they made during the measure 'J' campaign was a lie. Venoco has a despicable track record of genocidal behavior. Please read the book "Parts per Million" by Joy Horowitz about the skyrocketing cancer rates of an L.A. High School with oil derricks working on the campus. I have spoken to Lisa Rivas, and she is a smug shameless liar who is content to poison the people of Santa Barbara County, because she is well paid and gets cushy "non-profit" positions.Fracking = Act of war. Fracking = 700 carcinogens in your drinking water. Watch how fracking creates flammable tap water in this Academy Award winning movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZe1Ae...

Yes, Bill I agree with you that the real problem in this case is drunk driving. I hope Mallory's family can put this tragedy behind them someday.
On DUI Hit-and-Run Victim Dies, Suspect Charged with Murder

My condolences to the family of Mallory. What a horrible and 100% needless tragedy. There are so many red flags around Lois Capps! She lied when she said she wouldn't run again. Then she ran on a platform of "Fiscal Responsibility". When the vote came up this year to audit the Federal Reserve, which is the fiscal Pandora's Box of the USA, I called her office and her Legislative Aide, said, "Oh yes, Congresswoman Capps is voting to audit the Federal Reserve". Of course, Lois lied again and voted against auditing the Federal Reserve. Lois voted for the opposite of fiscal responsibility. Now she hires a multi-felonius criminal paid on the taxpayers dime, who, if you can believe the eyewitnesses at the accident scene, by his actions that night has to be one of the biggest degenerates in SB County. Throw in the fact that the Independent has an "Open Bar" which means, get as drunk as you want for free! What a giant confluence of sociopaths! Too bad it took a young girl's death to expose the layers of hypocrisy!LoonPt is right, the fact remains that if these people smoked pot, they would have most likely eaten a pizza, watched a video and gone to sleep.Instead, you have a dead girl, a grieving family, a bartender , a newspaper, and a Congresswoman who will share the guilt for the rest of their lives,. All because a criminal who had (2) prior DUI's, and a prior conviction for hit and run, and another conviction for grand theft was hired by Lois Capps. No legitimate employer would ever hire such a person, and no legitimate employer would ever hire without a background check. The lame apology from Lois' lackey is a pathetic attempt at damage control to cover up her sham hiring practices. I hope Mallory's family sues in civil court and takes every penny from all involved. I consider myself a Democrat, but the good people of the USA should completely ban any member of the Democratic Party or the Republican party from holding office ever again in the USA. What a bunch of slimeball crooks.

If the Independent were fair and balanced there would be an expansive article on the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. All broadcast and print media are required by the FCC to present both sides of an issue, but in direct conflict to US law, all I see coming from the Independent are favorable articles about local businesses that appear to be advertisements written by the local businesses' public relations team, masquerading as journalism, or letters and articles advocating rounding up the homeless population, and transporting them to another county. The Independent has gotten so shamelessly one sided and self absorbed that I almost miss the Santa Barbara News Press...
On The Guns of Santa Barbara County

Read Yesterday in the SB Independent that the defendant was acquitted. Although any 1st year law student would have dismissed this case before it started. The list of shocking things I have seen and heard coming out of the SB County Prosecutors office is over the top shameful.

On Manslaughter Charges Dropped in Motorcycle Death

Thank you Daryl Genis for standing up to the systemically corrupt Santa Barbara Cops. Anyone remember Kasi Beutel? It is a thorough and complete testament to brainwashing that anyone would support these 100% corrupt cops, corrupt prosecutors, and corrupt judges. The facts of the case remain that a friend of the deceased who was riding a motorcycle is charged with manslaughter. That fact alone should have thrown this case out during discovery. Now the cowardly bullies with badges feel they can intimidate witnesses on the courtroom steps, and even inside the courtroom?! I guess they are right because the Judge turns a blind eye to justice. The biggest surprise is not the thoroughly corrupt cops, prosecutors and judges of SB County, it's the eunich's that live in SB County and put up with this abuse, and even more pathetic, they critcize defense attorneys like Mr. Genis who have the guts to stand up to the bullies with badges. Good news for you folks - It will be much easier for you to lick Law Enforcements boots when they are on your neck.

Nice work Santa Barbara Independent! Thank you for the update from 2 years ago. Why pay journalists to write and editors to edit, when you can just re-print 2 year old articles? Genius.
