I'm pretty sure that in the past two and a half years McCaw has spent more on attorneys than my family line -- paternal and maternal, going back more generations than I can trace -- has earned in its history.

Spend on, Wendy. Surely it'll make you feel better some day.

Ed's one of the good guys, and let's all wish him the best.

On Ed Easton Collapses at GOO Event

I'm not so sure, sleuth. Yeah, the CC voted 4-1, but it's not that big a deal -- yet. The real test will come when the major changes to the General Plan -- the Track 3 amendments, many made at the behest of Bacara and other developers -- come up for consideration. The old CC was all over those with a religious fervor, whatever anybody else wanted, but I think you'll find Easton, Aceves and Margaret will have other ideas. Roger actually tried to the get all the Bacara changes thrown out, but he was overruled by the Onnen, Bennett, Blois majority. Stay tuned.

On Goleta Continues Amendment Process

The good news: McCaw's losing streak in the courts has restarted. Couldn't happen to a more deserving person.

The bad news: The innocent will pay. McCaw's history is stuffed with examples of her lashing out, indiscriminately, when faced with defeat. She just lost -- all hail the First Amendment! -- her libel suit against Susan Paterno and will be forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in Paterno's legal bills. And she could well lose soon in her legal jihad against Jerry Roberts. Again, that's great, but we're probably looking at more punitive layoffs at the NP, and McCaw's shown that she'll probably just fire the most competent people left -- what few there are.

It's an insane cycle -- lash out, lose, lash out -- but one all too familiar in Wendyland. God, this woman is a cancer.

Aren't all nouns to be capitalized?

It's a Matter of Style and customary Usage. Perhaps you've noticed that most capitalized Words are proper Nouns. In the Case of ethnic Groups, capitalization is reserved for Groups that come from Regions that are considered proper Nouns, such as Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc. I'm afraid there is no such as Place as White. Or Black. So, we get whites, Asians, blacks, Africans, Middle Easterners, etc.

Easy, no?

On Tourism Good for the Good Land?

It's difficult to overstate the stupidity and self-destructiveness of the Patrick Windmiller firing. Not only was he the only guy in the weak IT department who knew jack about Macs, he was also the most responsive. Whenever I called him with a problem -- and with the crappy design software we use it happens a lot -- he was was always happy to be of assistance. Most of the others, aside from Josie, act like you've ruined their day by asking for help.

Man, we're screwed. Again.

So long, Santa Barbara.

Congrats to Randy, Nick and the rest. We minions of Wendy love to see her thwarted. May this be just the beginning.

On News-Press, Indy Settle Lawsuit

Posted on May 1 at 8:51 p.m.

Firing the sports and life editors is beyond stupid. Barry, in particular, worked like a dog to keep that section alive and relevant. Sports, in fact, was the best thing about the pathetic News-Press. Way to reward dedication to craft, Wendy.

I've also heard from reliable sources that no replacement is planned for Barry. Stupid, stupid, stupid. If you thought the N-P was a thin and weak, you ain't seen nothing yet.

On News-Press Axes Ten

I just the read the whole thing (no partying for me, alas) and it's a complete and nasty repudiation of the News-Press management. Judge Kokol repeatedly called Steepleton a liar and said Travis, Wendy and Von Weaselburger were, ahem, less than credible.

God, I wish I could've been there when Wendy got the news.

Congratulations to my friends in the newsroom! Happy New Year!
