Since -- in my opinion -- it's the lure of tourism that keeps the city from seriously addressing our gang problem, why don't we increase the "bed tax" our hotels charge tourists? Use the extra money on anti-gang programs and law enforcement.

Hi mystikrich,
Perhaps you haven't been keeping up with the news. Journalists at the paper voted 33-6 in September 2006 to join a union. Publisher Wendy McCaw responded by illegally firing several reporters and challenging the legitimacy of the vote. The National Labor Relations Board found she had violated federal labor laws, ruled the reporters should be reinstated, and certified the union vote as legitimate. She is the one not willing to "try bargaining at the table." The vote to affiliate with a union was nearly two years ago.

This is WAY more than a union/non-union fight. The News-Press doesn't even attempt to serve the community. People worried about the Gap Fire had to pay to get crucial information — or go elsewhere. The Independent, Daily Sound, Noozhawk and Edhat.com have become the top news sources for the South Coast.

Thank you for the updates. It's been a sleepless night watching the flames from my bedroom window.

Talking about traffic... whatever happened to plans for a signal at Cieneguitas and Foothill? It's sorely needed there.

Just as bad are television shows that refer to females of all ages as "girls."
Males over the age of 18 aren't typically called "boys."

I wonder if those longtimers who have been laid off are being replaced by younger employees.
That could be considered age discrimination.

Why in heck does Lucky's feel the need for surveillance of its employees?
The restaurant doesn't trust the people it hires?

I was disappointed to see the headline and writeup accompanying this photograph. Thank you, rc251, for the clarification.
Other local Web sites are losing their credibility. One runs press releases with bylines, expecting us to believe they're news stories written by reporters. Another posts photos with captions reflecting the Webmaster's personal opinions, with no regard for accuracy or sensitivity to the people photographed.
Indy, you've been one of the few reliable sources for news and integrity on the South Coast. Please don't let us down.
