Kurds are the best friends America has in the region. They are singularly focused though on the effort to reverse the legacy of British and Frnch colonialism in the region that denied their nation a state of their own. The Kurds in Southern Kurdistan were independent and non-sectarian in the conflict that existed in Iraq. They did not need any American troops in their country and have established a regional government. They have yet to see the promises of the Iraqi Constitution to hold a referendum in Kirkuk in regards to its integration with the rest of the Kurdish Autonomous Region, as was promised. Their focus is for international recognition of their political and territorial gains. Kurds in Western Kurdistan defend their territory and are engaged in the transition process. The have come under attack from both sides of the civil war for defending themselves.
