To clarify the facts. My brother was one of the 16. I was notified by SBPD, at my home, within two hours of it occurring. I was given all information available by C.E. staff and his personal effects given to me. The Coroner's office particularly, Det. Finsky, was extraordinarily kind, taking time from his family to make sure I was informed and he listened to everything I had to say, making me feel heard and respected. I was given all of the facts available and explained the final cause of death, accidental, even though prescribed drugs were a large factor, as well as his overall health.
I could not ask for anything to have been handled any better or differently by C.E., SBPD,the coroners office or the mortuary.
Death unexpectedly, anywhere is tragic and unfortunate but I do not believe that it because anyone did not care or was looked at "less than". Our health, mental and physical are generally the primary factors in unexpected death and we are lucky to be a city where there is help available to those that want it. Jennifer G

On Free to Go … Where?

It's ironic the article that is just above this one. You might find it beneficial to read. You never know who might end up in jail and why. Compassion and a change in the way the jail handles their policies seem to need to be addressed.

Be careful about clicking on mystery links, some of them take you to sites that seem to infect the computer. One was porn related. It was reported.

How very sad. Unfortunately there is no right answer or solution. My mothers maiden name was Wheeler and my grandmother became ill with Alzheimer's and deteriorated in a matter of months. She was no longer the person she was, just the body existing.
I wonder what the solution to this would be many years from now ? Will there ever be one? Hopefully the family can find some peace.
At least they can be assured that their situation has brought to light a problem that clearly needs to be looked at and addressed. Hopefully it will bring us as a society, to look for solutions out of knowing what to do rather than leaving family members to do things out of shear desperation, just to stop the pain and suffering of loved ones.
I hope for the best outcome of a very difficult situation.

I think that there is one more burgeoning "world" in SB that is missing. It is students from everywhere, going either to SBCC, UCSB or other colleges we have here. I have seen entire neighborhoods change over the last 15 years. The price of rentals have gone up a huge amount, due to either many students in one apartment or parents with money that pay whatever it takes to live here. The noise problem in certain apartment complexes without managers, (usually illegally,) or managers that do not manage, have contributed greatly to the lower quality of living in some areas.

It would be interesting to see someone, a reporter perhaps, do some research in Santa Barbara to see how neighborhoods have changed due to the influx of students. The mesa, near downtown and Goleta have all seen "new neighborhoods of students.

Try finding an affordable apartment anywhere that is not full of students.

This article has some inflamitory statements and could have used some proofing. It is Ladera Street and is a neighborhood of collage students, condominiums, older homes and low income housing. It is not one of the poorest parts of town and does not have more problems than any other that is a neighborhood that is crowded. My question everytime is, what is going on with the parents of these young children and why aren't they being held accountable for their childen?
There is no one "patch" for this problem, but many are needed. We need to address the families, substance abuse and emotional problems for these children.
As well, if the media, writer of this article, could give clearer facts, less "fluff" that only makes people more agitated, maybe solutions would be clearer for readers.
Gang problems with children this young is, A FAMILY PROBLEM!
