I agree that the city has wasted far more money on other projects. I have been involved in fighting the city's street obstruction program for the past year and a half, and that project's expenses dwarf those of the Light Blue Line.
You shouldn't assume that everyone is as knowledgeable about the city budget as you are. Part of the problem is that our city bureaucracy has grown so large, there are so many projects and initiatives going on that it's hard to keep track. I didn't know that the city had given the Maritime Museum grants and rent subsidies. That sounds wrong, and if you spoke out against it, congratulations.
On your other point, I question whether the city should be spending tax money on art, but I'm certain that it shouldn't be funding political statements disguised as art. That applied to the anti-McDonalds/anti-Bush display you allude to, and it applies to Mr. Caron's extreme and highly debatable views on global warming. Even our city council would agree with me on this principle if the art in question promoted political views different from their own.
