On Life in the Fast Lane

Posted on July 24 at 11:52 a.m.

If you want to do a carpool so you benefit from the extra lane it's fairly easy. Either find someone you already know, or look for a stranger. I do it. If you look for a stranger it'll take a little leg work. But not that tough. I normally make a post on GishiGo.com website (to exchange identity and create a papertrail - confidence is a key issue with rideshare) and then announce it all over the social networks like Craigslist, Kijiji, MySpace, etc. As people respond I tell them to "make a match" to my GishiGo post (a whopping 99cent investment) to show they are legit. After they put up 99 cents (the problem with many systems is no investment means BS way too much, common "free & anonymous" social network problem) I check their employment and perhaps do some other easy & free checks with internet and phone call. Basically use your head and try to go in groups. If you find 2 or 3 people, then even if you don't like 1 person it's not end of world. And you don't invite next time. Once you build up a list of people you like and know, then it's really easy to carpool.
