San Clemente native Palmer Patterson Gibbs originally came to Santa Barbara six years ago to study political science at Westmont College. After serving as the student newspaper’s first female sports editor, Palmer became its editor-in-chief; she further cut her journalistic teeth during a brief stint in Washington, D.C., where she wrote and edited for Off Our Backs, a radical feminist magazine. Palmer has worked at The Independent for two years and is currently the senior copy editor.
