Yahoo!Victims of Southern California’s wildfires have a new tool at their disposal as they slowly begin to pick up the pieces. Disastervictim.org is an online social network similar to MySpace or Facebook specifically designed to connect those affected by natural disasters and volunteers who are looking to provide aid. Interclique Inc., a Santa Barbara-based company that specializes in developing online social networks, created the site. Staffed by SBCC and UCSB alumni, the company says they saw a need for a resource that would act as a platform for those who were suffering to express their grief and find consolation.
The network allows members to post photos, share stories, and connect with other victims. It also provides contact information for various kinds of assistance that community members might need, as well as current updates on disasters. Membership is free and secure. The site does not take donations, but rather redirects those who wish to donate to the Red Cross’s website. Interclique will also donate proceeds from advertising on the site to the Red Cross. The developers hope that through disastervictim.org those in need will be able to find those who are eager to offer their time and resources. Donors and volunteers can use the site to find where their assistance is most needed. The fledgling disastervictim.org is an online network that reflects the community of Southern California, rebuilding and reconnecting, making friends out of strangers.
