Do you all remember the Saturday Night Live routine “Quien es mas macho?” Seems to me that’s how some politicians would like to play out this election.
Tony Strickland, for example, in his campaign for the 19th State Senate District, seems to be playing a variant: “Quien es mas verde?” The joke, of course, is that while he markets himself on the ballot as an “alternative energy executive" and features renewable energy images in his advertising, he barely reaches above zero percent in his lifetime California League of Conservation Voters rating. As a member of the California State Assembly, he voted against nearly every piece of environmentally friendly legislation that he came across.
In contrast, former Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson received an early endorsement from the California League of Conservation Voters and and has received the endorsement of the Sierra Club in every election in which she’s been a candidate. Now that's green!
I hope the voters won’t be fooled by the Strickland routine. There are far too many environmental problems that simply can’t be addressed by a joker mouthing green slogans and voting quite otherwise.

Si, pero quien es mas smug? There's a car in my 'hood, a hybrid, with the personalized plate "gud4erth" or somesuch. Now, exactly what is good for the earth about this car? Nothing! What's good for the earth about the bicycle I ride in lieu of driving? Nothing! What's good for the earth about the shoes on my feet? You guessed it. So let's stop calling ourselves green. Less brown, maybe. As for Tony vs Hannah-Beth there's no contest as to who will be better for the earth.
